Comprehensive Assessment

After your appointment is set up and completed, a comprehensive assessment will be performed. A comprehensive assessment is specifically targeted for each individual. It includes assessing, describing, and interpreting an individual's communication ability, integrating a variety of information gathered in the evaluation process. ASHA's Preferred Practice Patterns for the Professions of Speech-Language Pathology (2004) indicates that comprehensive speech-language pathology assessment may include these components.

  • Standardized and/or non-standardized measures of specific aspects of speech, spoken and non-spoken language, cognitive-communication, voice, and swallowing function, including observations and analysis of work samples
  • Selection of standardized measures for speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, and/or swallowing assessment with consideration for documented ecological validity and cultural sensitivity
  • Follow-up services to monitor communication and swallowing status and ensure appropriate intervention and support for individuals with identified speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, and/or swallowing disorders

Treatment

Treatment designed to target functional outcomes and improve quality of life is completed after an assessment. All treatment is based on each client’s disorders and specific needs. Speech therapy is effective for both children and adults. Speech and Language Pathologists can use various techniques to help a person improve their communication and swallowing skills. Treatment may include, but is not limited to, some of the following examples.

The SLP may use therapeutic exercises and activities to help them overcome their specific issues that affect communication or swallowing.

  • Language activities: Involves playing and talking with the child while using pictures, books, and objects to stimulate language development. The SLP may also demonstrate correct pronunciation and use repetition exercises to help increase the child’s language skills.
  • Articulation activities: These will involve the SLP working closely with a child to help them with their pronunciation. The SLP will demonstrate how to make specific sounds, often during play activities.
  • Feeding and swallowing therapy: An SLP can work closely with a child with chewing or swallowing issues. The SLP can also use oral exercises to help strengthen the muscles in the mouth or work with different food textures to improve the child’s oral awareness.
  • Swallowing exercises: Medical issues, such as Parkinson’s disease, oral cancer, or a stroke, may cause swallowing difficulties. An SLP can use swallowing exercises to help a person manage these issues.
  • Social Communication: Social communication enables individuals to share experiences, thoughts, and emotions. Social communication skills are needed for language expression and comprehension in nonverbal, spoken, written, and visual–gestural (sign language) modalities. Social communication skills include the ability to:
    • adjust speech style based on context
    • understand the perspectives of other
    • understand and appropriately use the rules for verbal and nonverbal communication, and
    • use the structural aspects of language (e.g., vocabulary, syntax, and phonology)
    • SLP may use problem-solving, memory activities, and conversation exercises to improve communication
  • Voice therapy consists of a variety of tasks designed to eliminate harmful vocal behavior, shape healthy vocal behavior, and assist in vocal fold wound healing after surgery or injury.
